The Steyr SSG 08 is a high-precision, high-performance rifle that was designed to meet the rigid specifications of Austria’s EKO COBRA anti-terrorism unit and developed for professional applications in demanding environments. 

Each SSG 08 is built on the SBS platform that includes a hard Eloxal-coated folding aircraft-aluminum stock with an adjustable rear monopod, a cheek piece that is vertically and horizontally adjustable, and a recoil pad that can be adjusted by adding and removing spacers and by indexing the pad in various vertical positions. The pistol grip is modular with a choice of interchangeable back straps to adjust for hand size and optimized grip. The action is topped with a 20-MOA Picatinny rail for optical sights, while the forend features short Picatinny rails for accessories on both sides. The underside of the stock also houses a UIT rail for the addition of a hand stop or other accessories. A heavy-duty bi-pod is also included.

The SSG 08 features Steyr’s Safe Bolt System (SBS) action with a unique 3-position safety conveniently located behind the bolt assembly. The receiver of this rifle features a patented safety bushing which offers enhanced protection from unexpected, excessive chamber pressure and any escaping gases. Steyr has tested the bushing with high pressure proof rounds at a level of 120,000 psi without any damage to the rifle. 

The SSG 08 also features an innovative 2-stage magazine which allows the user to safely close the bolt without chambering a round when the magazine is dropped to its lowest position without removing the magazine from the rifle. 

The SSG 08 is chambered in the following calibers:

• .308 Winchester with 23.6-inch or 20-inch barrel length, 10-round magazine
• .300 Winchester Magnum with 23.6-inch barrel length, 8-round magazine
• .338 Lapua Magnum with 25.6-inch barrel length, 6-round magazine
